SPOILERS FOR SEASON 3, EPISODE 13 FOLLOW!
By: Tyler Miller
It’s not often that Agents of SHIELD makes its viewers feel sad when watching the show. The last time that happened was in season two when Trip died in the midseason finale. That all changed though last night as things changed for the team in a big way, and we all said goodbye to some more team members.
Last night’s episode to a step back from the bigger Inhuman picture and was focused mostly on Bobbi and Hunter. This was made clear right from the start as it started off in media res with Bobbi in a Moscow prison, being interrogated about something happened the previous day. The episode regularly jumps between Bobbi and Hunter’s interrogation and the mission from the previous day, and through this we find out that they killed someone pretty important, causing them to end up in their distressing situation. As a result of this, Hunter is almost sent to trial and executed because Bobbi doesn’t reveal that she works for SHIELD.
Jump back 34 hours earlier and we’re picking up where we left off last week, with Bobbi and Hunter following Malick to his Inhuman “sanctuary” in Russia. They’re on the ground while the rest of the team is in the air, following them and watching out for them. They eventually find Malick’s Inhuman “sanctuary” and have a little talk about their relationship, with Hunter noting that they’ve never gone on a vacation together and they are way overdue for one. He contacts Coulson once Malick arrives and asks if they have permission to take him out if possible, something that gets shut down by Coulson and upsets Hunter.
May, Mack, and Daisy come and join Bobbi and Hunter on the mission after they get into an altercation with some guards. May and Hunter go off together while Mack, Daisy, and Bobbi go to find the security room so that they can locate Malick. Being the well oiled machine that they are, this all goes off without a hitch. After locating Malick, Bobbi goes undercover and spies on his conversation. While Bobbi is spying on Malick, May and Hunter are staking out the car that he’ll leave in. They end up talking about their relationship and how important SHIELD really is to Hunter.
Through her spying, Bobbi finds out that there’s an Inhuman on site that’s a military general and Malick wants to set him loose so that he can stage a coup against the Russian Prime Minister who’s on his way there. It’s at this point where the general is released and Malick leaves the site. May and Hunter don’t pursue him, instead going inside to assist the rest of the team in protecting the Prime Minister.

The whole team meets up at the meeting that the Prime Minister is having and spring into action. Smoke grenades go out and May starts fighting the people on Malick’s side while Hunter takes the Prime Minister and Daisy, Mack, and Bobbi take the general. The general then reveals his power, which is using darkforce to make his shadow it’s own being. He quickly knocks out Mack, leaving Bobbi and Daisy to fight him alone. The girls are badasses though, so they hold their own in what is a pretty cool fight until the general’s shadow knocks out Daisy and escapes. Mack wakes up and takes her out of the building while Bobbi tracks down the general to try and stop him.
Meanwhile, Hunter is trying to make it out of the building to get the Prime Minister to safety when the general’s shadow finds them. It gets the upper hand on him and almost kills him when Bobbi finds the general and puts a couple bullets in him, killing him and his shadow. Unfortunately this is what gets her and Hunter arrested and put in Russian prison.
We’re then brought back to the present day in the prison after the interrogations have taken place. Hunter and Bobbi are reunited and talk about their options while President Ellis talks with the Prime Minister about the situation and whether or not Hunter and Bobbi are connected to SHIELD. Coulson then goes in to talk with his agents, telling them that the team has an extraction plan to get Bobbi and Hunter out of there. The two of them shoot it down though, telling him that it’s not a good idea and that there’s only option for them in this situation: to leave SHIELD for good. Coulson doesn’t want to do it, but even he knows that it’s the only option they have. He returns to the rest of the team and breaks the bad news to them who are clearly upset about the situation, especially Mack.
Finally we get to the sad part of the episode. Bobbi and Hunter are in a bar talking about possible vacation spots now that they’re free and no longer agents when the bartender brings them a drink from a “stranger” that didn’t give their name. Hunter then looks around and notices that Simmons is sitting in a booth behind them. The bartender keeps bringing more drinks and one by one we see the whole team is in the bar watching them. It’s a truly heartbreaking moment that had me shed a tear. I wish the episode had ended there, but as with most episodes of the show there was one last scene to go. This scene introduced Malick’s daughter, and she seems to be really interested in Hive.
Other thoughts:
- It really sucks to see Hunter and Bobbi go since they’re great characters on the show. But now they have their own show (Marvel’s Most Wanted), so hopefully it does well. I’m not totally sold on it yet because I don’t know if they can carry a show on their own, but we’ll see.
- It was great to see Mack again this week. Even if he didn’t do much, the show definitely different this week with him, and I mean that in a good way. I don’t know, maybe it’s just that I like his character a lot.
- Speaking of Mack, I wonder how his character is going to be over the next few episodes now that Bobbi and Hunter are gone.
- The Russian Prime Minister is an ass for not just being grateful Hunter and Bobbi saved his life. You almost died and you want to kill the people who saved you? Makes a lot of sense..
Agents of SHIELD had a pretty good episode this week. It didn’t delve into the Inhuman situation that much this week, but that’s just fine. It gave two of it’s best characters (in my opinion) a great sendoff in a nice tight episode, and offered some pretty nice action as well. That’s enough to satisfy me.
