SPOILERS FOR SEASON 3, EPISODE 17 FOLLOW!
By: Tyler Miller
We’re in the final stretch of the season for Agents of SHIELD, so things are expected to escalate and change the game in big ways. With last night’s episode things have definitely changed for everyone, viewers and team members included.
The episode continued where the previous one ended, with Daisy and Lincoln gathering Elena and Joey for their rescue mission. With our Secret Warriors all together, they go into the Hydra base to get the rest of the team who’s holed themselves up in a closet with guards hot on their trail. On top of that, May’s wounded so their situation isn’t looking good. Our Secret Warriors split up to find the others faster and we get to see how efficiently the team works. In the process, Lincoln finds Gideon and starts to take him back to the plane.
Lincoln and Joey bring Gideon back to the plane, but they encounter Lucio (Medusa Eyes) there first. He freezes Lincoln, but Joey comes in with a nice save and kills him. Elena and Daisy find the others and everyone returns to the plane, finally heading back to SHIELD HQ. What they don’t know though is that one of them is a double agent working for Hive now.
Back at HQ, Coulson and Gideon come face to face with each other and have a talk about Hive and his plans. Gideon warns him that Hive gets people under his sway and causes them to betray those they were once allied with, implying that one of the Secret Warriors is a double agent. Having this information in mind, Coulson tells Mack to quietly lock down the base so that no one leaves.
Having locked down the base, Coulson orders Mack, Fitz, and Simmons to try and figure out which of the Secret Warriors has been swayed by Hive. Fitz and Simmons are tasked with figuring out what they can from Lucio’s body while Mack is tasked with watching each of them on the cameras around the base. Daisy comes in and asks why everything is locked down, but Coulson lies to keep her out of the loop since he can’t trust her.
Coulson returns to Gideon and tries to convince him to work with SHIELD by giving them all the information they need to try and stop Hive. How does he do this? By selling him on the idea of getting revenge for the death of his daughter, and it works out in his favor too. While the two of them talk, Fitz and Simmons perform an operation on Lucio to see what’s going on inside of his head. They discover an infection on his brain that came from Hive and also caused major damage to him.
It’s then that the power goes out and things begin to go downhill. Malick ends up dead by some mysterious cause, and all signs point to one of the Secret Warriors being responsible for everything. They all get cornered in a hallway by Coulson and some others when he explains the situation to them all, causing them to panic and get defensive. The four of them run into a side room and lock the door so that no one can get to them while they all talk it out and figure out who the double agent is. None of them believe each other, but they end up following Daisy to a secret exit that will get them away from everything and allow them to further talk it out. Only thing is, the secret exit was really just a containment chamber where Coulson was waiting for them all.

Coulson reveals that he found the orb Lincoln got last week and that he knew he took the Terrine crystals, causing him to be the prime suspect here. This obviously angers Lincoln, but Daisy knocks him out before he attacks Coulson. The four of them are then separated and forced to have their blood tested to see who’s been infected. Joey and Elena are pissed and want out of SHIELD (understandably so), and Daisy has a chat with Coulson about how she’s responsible for the team falling apart so easily after they were doing so well. He gives her some words of encouragement, but tells her that they all have to stay in containment and can’t encounter Hive so that this doesn’t happen to anyone else.
In the midst of all of this, Fitz and Simmons have a sweet moment alone and finally get together! After being separated for months and then not knowing where they stood in terms of their relationship, they’re finally together and they couldn’t be happier.
We then see Lincoln in his chamber when Daisy appears at the door. She came to get him out and tries to convince him to run away with her and leave SHIELD behind, but he doesn’t budge. In fact, this causes him to realize that Daisy is the one who was infected by Hive and that she framed him so that she would be clear to do what she had to. She also reveals that she’s the one that killed Gideon. With all this information, Lincoln ends things with Daisy and she leaves, taking the orb and some Terrine crystals with her. As she leaves she uses her powers to start bringing the ground down on top of the base with a smile on her face. Our final scene this week wasn’t too monumental, as it consisted of Giyera telling Hive that they still have Gideon’s money at their disposal and Hive saying that they’re going to use it. What they’ll use it for is anyone’s guess.
Other thoughts:
- The way the Secret Warriors worked together to get the others out of Hydra was great, but it sucks that yet again the team has been disbanded just as fast as they were brought together. We want more of them!
- It was pretty damn emotional when Gideon talked to Coulson about how his daughter died because of Hive. I genuinely felt bad for the guy in that scene, as opposed to last week where I didn’t feel anything at all.
- The big question is what’s going to happen with Daisy for the remainder of the season? Is she going to come back to the good guys before the season’s over? What will happen to her if they defeat Hive? Can she even be trusted again if she joins the team? So many questions that I’ll be thinking about in the coming weeks leading to the finale.
- Fitz and Simmons are together! I already expressed some excitement for this above, but I’m just very happy for them.
- I really hope the Secret Warriors come together one more time before the season’s over. They’re too good together to not fight by each other’s side one more time.
This week’s episode was a pretty good episode all around. We got some nice action at the start, and then had that followed up with some real tension and mystery as we tried to figure out who was the double agent, all for a very surprising payoff. There’s not that many episodes left in the season, so let’s keep up this good streak.
