Road To E3 2016: Ubisoft

By: Tyler Miller

Continuing in our Road To E3 2016 series, we’re three shows down which leaves us with only Ubisoft and Sony left to talk about. Today though, the focus is on Ubisoft’s E3 press conference. Let’s jump right on into this!

What I’m Looking Forward To

For Honor

Every year, Ubisoft has some amazing surprise announcement that somehow managed to not leak before their press conference. Last year that was the announcement of For Honor, the game in which you play as either vikings, medieval knights, or samurais in all out war. The game looks awesome with it’s slow, methodical approach to combat and the large scale of its battles. There’s no doubt that this game will show up at E3 this year with another trailer or gameplay demo (or both) and I’m hyped for it.

Ghost Recon: Wildlands

The new Ghost Recon: Wildlands looks just like the type of game that I’ve been wanting to play for a while. Being able to approach missions in multiple ways with three buddies in an open world is something that I’ve been wanting to do for a while now, and it looks like Wildlands will be filling that itch based on last year’s gameplay trailer. Just the thought of being able to tackle a mission at night using stealth tactically with three buddies, or doing the same mission during the day guns blazing excites the living hell out of me. This game is definitely going to be at Ubisoft’s press conference this year, and hopefully it’ll be there with a fall 2016 release date.

South Park: The Fractured But Whole

I have to admit, I never got around to playing South Park: The Stick of Truth although I really wanted to. I do love the show though, so that’s more than enough reason for me to be excited for South Park: The Fractured But Whole (hehe, get it?). The first game was really well received by fans and critics alike, so I have no doubt that the sequel will impress as well. I’m not sure if we’ll get a demo of some sort at Ubisoft’s press conference, but we’re bound to get a trailer during the show that’ll contain even more of the humor that the series is known for and probably some gameplay as well.

Watch Dogs 2

The first Watch Dogs was a good game that was bogged down by a boring protagonist, poor driving controls, and a story that wasn’t too interesting. Even with these problems, it showed a lot of potential to be great in future installments. With the recently announced Watch Dogs 2, it looks like Ubisoft is realizing that potential and expanding on all of the things that were good about the first game, while fixing everything that was bad about it at the same time. We’ve got a new protagonist, a new location, and a lot of new things that we can do with our hacking abilities, so things are already on the right track. As of right now I’m somewhat hyped for the game, so I’m looking forward to seeing an extended demo at E3 to get me fully hyped for the game.

Ubisoft’s Classic Surprise Announcement

The most exciting part of any Ubisoft E3 press conference is always the surprise announcement that they make either at the end or midway through the show. It’s been a staple of their show and leads to people wondering just what the hell the company has in store to show us. What could it be this year? I’m willing to bet that either Beyond Good & Evil 2 or the new Prince of Persia gets revealed this year. It’s been a long time since Beyond Good & Evil 2 was announced and had gameplay leaked, and ever since then the game has been in development hell along with Half-Life 3The Last Guardian, and Final Fantasy XV. Two of those games are actually real and coming out this year, so maybe Beyond Good & Evil 2 will finally show it’s face as well? As for Prince of Persia, there were a few rumors ago that the series was going to return with a new protagonist, but nothing ever came of them. The last time the series was in the spotlight was in 2010 when Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands came out alongside the film, but the game was forgettable. It’s been six years, so it’s time for this great franchise to make a return to the limelight.

What I Don’t Want To Happen

Some Goofy Shit To Go Down

Everyone remembers Battle Tag right? The laser tag game that Ubisoft showed off in 2010 during their press conference with attractive people running and flipping around as they shot at each other. You remember that right? Right guys?? Oh yeah, I forgot that this was something we all tried to forget happened as soon as it was over. This was far too goofy and stupid, and E3 was definitely not the place to show this off. Ubisoft has gotten better in recent years, but they are an interesting company so you never know with them. Please don’t put us through something like this Ubisoft.

A Musical Performance

Last year when Ubisoft announced their latest installment in the Just Dance series, they brought pop artist Jason Derulo on stage to perform one of his songs. Yet again, this is a case of Ubisoft doing something that has no place at E3. No one goes to E3 to watch a musician perform for them (especially if it’s badly). They go there to see awesome games and hear great announcements. So please Ubisoft, DO NOT subject us to another two and a half minutes of awkwardness. Save everyone the trouble and just please don’t have this happen.

An Extended Plug For The Assassin’s Creed Movie

Don’t get me wrong, I’m cautiously excited for the Assassin’s Creed movie coming this year. With this being E3, it’s only a given that Ubisoft will try and advertise their movie to the fans of the series, although I would much prefer that they didn’t show it here at all. In their defense, it’s a sound move to make since the people at E3 are the ones that are most likely going to see it. I can see this going poorly though if they decide to dedicate too much time to the movie. Want to show us a new trailer for the movie? Fine, go ahead and do that, but don’t do anything more than that. We don’t need to have anyone from the movie to come on stage and talk about how great it’s been working on it, especially if that’s not followed up by footage of some sort.

The ball is in your court Ubisoft. You guys can deliver a solid press conference that’s devoid of awkward and goofy moments. All I ask is that you please don’t let us down. Come out swinging and don’t stop swinging guys.
