Things Start To Make More Sense On Preacher

SPOILERS FOR SEASON 1, EPISODE 3 FOLLOW!

By: Tyler Miller

Yet again I have to apologize for not getting this recap out yesterday. For those that may not know, yesterday was the start of E3 2016, the year’s biggest going convention. With that being the case, there was a lot of news coming out and unfortunately no time to write up this recap during the day. The big stuff is out of the way now though, so things will be returning back to normal. Now, let’s get into this episode of Preacher that was an improvement over the one we got last week.

Things started with a conversation between Tulip and a woman named Danny in Houston. Tulip gave her a map in exchange for an address to someone’s house. She then has a flashback to when she pulled off a crime a couple years ago with Jesse and got left behind by someone. Danny then leaves and goes to a theater where she gives the map to an unknown man.

We then see the sheriff of the town talking to the two mysterious alien hunters in a motel about what the hell they’re doing in the town. They inform him that they’re looking for someone that got loose in the town and need to keep their business a secret so that no one else gets involved. After the sheriff leaves the two of them decide to try and get the alien from Jesse again. Elsewhere in the town, Tracy’s mom is talking to Emily about how her daughter opened her eyes after Jesse came earlier. We then see Donny walking with his son to the bus stop for school, and they stop to talk about how he abuses his wife, although it’s really just sexual and not real abuse. The two of them then go to the bus where Donny gets teased by all the kids on the bus because they all heard about how Jesse beat his ass badly.

Over at the church, Cassidy sees that a coffin is outside and is told by Emily that it has to be taken to a crematorium in town. He gets dressed and tells Jesse that he’s about to head out, but then Jesse says that he has something to show him. Jesse then proceeds to use his powers on Cassidy to have him do simple things, just so he can understand what’s going on. Neither of them can figure out how he got his powers, but Jesse says that it feels like all of God’s creation is inside of him. This prompts Cassidy to tell Jesse to think of the possibilities of what the two of them can do now that he has these powers.

While all of this is going on, Tulip is heading back to town when she gets pulled over by a cop for speeding. She manages to talk her way out of it and continues heading to town to try and get Jesse in on her job. At the same time, Donny is at his job in his boss’ office telling him about how another company is breathing down their necks. He wants to do something about it, but his boss doesn’t let him because he’s injured and can’t do anything with just one arm. This only further upsets Donny and makes him hate Jesse even more. In town, Cassidy is leaving the crematorium after delivering the coffin when he sees an SUV with the alien hunters in it. He doesn’t realize that it’s them, but he thinks the people inside are after him.

In the meantime, Jesse is on the road driving somewhere when Tulip pulls up next to him. They pull over and Tulip tries yet again to get Jesse to join her. He’s not on board at first, but once she says that she’s trying to get justice against Carlos for leaving them behind, he agrees to go with her. Later that night, they arrive at a gas station to make a quick stop. Jesse is about to tell Tulip about his powers, but then he changes his mind and goes to use the bathroom. While he’s in there, Donny appears behind him with a gun and makes him get on his knees so he can kill him. Jesse isn’t afraid though and threatens to beat Jesse like a bitch again. Donny goes to attack Jesse, but then Jesse uses his powers on him to make him sit on a toilet and put the gun in his mouth. He almost makes him kill himself, but then he has a change of heart and lets him go. Jesse then leaves the bathroom and tells Tulip that he’s not going with her to kill Carlos because he changed his mind, and he starts to walk back home.

As this is all happening, the alien hunters are at the church and ready to go inside to get Jesse when Cassidy comes and runs them over with his vehicle. He realizes who they are and gets confused, but goes inside the church to get stuff to bury them again. He then hears someone inside the church and starts to head to the entrance to find who it is, only to come across the hunters again. They then explain to him that they’re from Heaven and they’re trying to get the thing that’s inside of Jesse. Cassidy decides to help them by being their middle man and explaining the situation to Jesse so that he’ll give the powers to them.

As the episode comes to a close we see Eugene talking to his dad about how Tracy opened her eyes and suggests visiting her, but his dad is against him doing that because he doesn’t want anything to happen to Eugene. The following morning, Jesse and Emily hold a private funeral for the guy who killed himself in front of his mother in the premiere. As they’re having the funeral, the camera pans over to a pipe of sorts and it opens up, causing revealing what appears to be another alien similar to the one in Jesse.

Other thoughts:

  • The news report on the tv about Tom Cruise’s funeral was a funny callback to when he died in the premiere alongside all the other preachers that the alien came in contact with.
  • I wonder if Carlos is going to come back into the picture later in the season. Jesse may have refused to go kill him with Tulip, but I don’t think Tulip is going to let that job go.
  • Cassidy agreeing to be the middle man for the alien hunters is going to throw a wrench into his relationship with Jesse for sure. I get the feeling that Jesse isn’t going to be that happy about giving up his newfound powers, so this may cause his friendship with Cassidy to suffer if he really does try to get him to give up the powers.
  • Who was the man that Danny gave the map to at the start of the episode? We never got to see his face and he never spoke, so we really have no idea who he is or what his intentions are. I’m sure he’s definitely going to be popping up again later in the season.

This was a good episode for Preacher. It furthered the plot and also made things clearer for us, something that the previous episode didn’t do so it’s already a step in the right direction for the show. Things look like they’re going to get pretty intense in the next episode based on the preview we got for it, so let’s just see how things play out.
