We’re at the final stop on the Road to E3 2017, and boy is it a great stop to end on. Sony has been having a great year so far, and E3 can continue this good streak that they have going. I’m really looking forward to the many things that will be at Sony’s show, so without further ado, let’s just get right on into this because we have a lot to talk about.
What I’m Looking Forward To
God of War

Sony started off their E3 show last year the right way with the reveal of God of War. Seeing an older Kratos in the world of Norse mythology fighting trolls with his son was incredible. The new game looks to be taking the series in a different direction from its predecessors, focusing more on the characters as opposed to hack-and-slash, balls to the wall combat. We haven’t seen anything from the game since E3 last year, so I’m positive that we’ll be seeing even more of the game this year, and hopefully getting a release window as well.
Detroit: Become Human

Quantic Dream’s newest cinematic game Detroit: Become Human made a splash last year with this cool trailer showing just how different a single scenario could play out. I’m really into games like those, so this is right up my alley. It wouldn’t surprise me if we got a look at another character in the game since we’ve already seen two so far. If the new trailer focuses on that, continues to highlight the gameplay and story, and gives us some kind of release date or window, I’ll be more than pleased. Just don’t end the trailer with the character speaking to the audience. That’s just weird.
Spider-Man

Spider-Man hasn’t gotten a good game in such a long time. The last good one in my opinion was Ultimate Spider-Man on the PS2, so we’re dying for a good game for the web slinger. We know that Insomniac Games is working on Spider-Man for the PS4 and that it isn’t connected to the movies, but nothing else. Last year we got a nice little tease of the game, and it looked awesome. After a year of radio silence, it’s time for Spidey to come back in a big way with a huge gameplay blowout. Show me just how detailed New York City is. Give me an idea of just what I’ll be able to do in the city. Probably most importantly, show me that it’ll be FUN to swing around the city as the wall crawler and beat on bad guys. In the meantime, I’ll just watch this trailer a couple more times in the lead up to the show in anticipation.
The Last of Us Part II

Gosh, what is there to say about The Last of Us Part II? The first game was a masterpiece, and is still one of my favorite games of all time, so the anticipation and expectations are high for the sequel. We got the reveal last year at PSX, so I expect that we’ll get some gameplay and possibly another trailer at E3 this year. What will we see? I have absolutely no idea. But I do know that it’ll be visceral, moody, and it’ll be something that makes me only want the game even more.
Big Japanese Game Announcements

For fans of Japanese games, it looks Sony’s E3 show just might be the place where your favorite developer makes a big announcement. In a recent interview with Time magazine, Sony Interactive Entertainment America president and CEO Shawn Layden teased that there would be some big announcements from Japanese developers at the show this year. That automatically makes me think that we could be getting some new footage and news from big games such as Kingdom Hearts III (especially if recent rumors are to be believed) and Final Fantasy VII Remake. It also means that we could be getting the announcement of Bloodborne 2, the sequel to From Software’s beloved PS4 exclusive. At this point, it’s anyone’s guess as to what can show up from Japanese devs.
Destiny 2

Destiny 2 is most definitely going to be at Sony’s press conference in a big way, and I’m incredibly excited for it. The latest gameplay reveal for the game made my hype levels for the game rise considerably, so I’m dying to see more of this game. I’m looking forward to seeing more of the worlds and missions that we’ll be able to go on, as well as getting a better look at the weapons and class abilities that’ll be at our disposal this time around. We might not get a huge Destiny 2 blowout during the show, but anything will be better than nothing right now.
Call of Duty: WWII

For the first time in years, Call of Duty is going back to its roots with the upcoming WWII. Fans have been desperate for a return to this time period ever since Black Ops 3 came out, and it looks like the game is going to deliver everything that they’ve been asking for. I personally wasn’t one of these people crying for a return to this era of war, but I’m certainly looking forward to playing the game. It looks great graphically, and appears to be delivering a harsher, grittier story than past games in the series have. We’ll be seeing multiplayer gameplay at E3 as well, so perhaps we’ll get not a single-player and multiplayer trailer during Sony’s show. Only time will tell.
What I Don’t Want To Happen
For Sony To Not Repeat Last Year
There’s only one thing I don’t want to happen this year during Sony’s show, and that’s for them to have a show that was like last year’s. Last year, Sony’s show consisted of nothing but game after game after game, with only 4 interruptions during the show from Shawn Layden and Andrew House; interruptions that only took up about 5 minutes of the show’s total runtime. And let’s not forget the live orchestra as well playing throughout the show. Sony’s press conference last year was the shining example of what all E3 press conferences should be. Show us the games and don’t waste time standing around and talking unless it’s absolutely necessary (and let’s be honest, most times it’s not). They’ve said already that this year’s show will be like last year’s so I’m taking their word on this one, but I’m still listing it just in case.
Sony is coming into E3 on top of the world right now, but Microsoft may have their back against the wall if Project Scorpio kicks as much ass as they claim it will. If Sony wants to continue to dominate this year at the show, they need to bring out the big guns and deliver a fantastic show like last year that’s filled with nothing but awesome games. If anyone can do it, it’s them.
