Let’s Breakdown The Avengers: Infinity War Trailer

By: Tyler Miller

It’s been a long time coming guys, but the first trailer for Avengers: Infinity War dropped this morning, and boy was it amazing. I spent 45 minutes watching it nonstop this morning once it was released until I had to head out the house, so it’s safe to say that I’m sufficiently hyped.

Today we’re going to do our first ever trailer analysis/breakdown and look through the Infinity War trailer! Strap yourself in because we’ve got a lot to talk about. And needless to say, but there will be SPOILERS for Thor: Ragnarok in here, so read at your own discretion!

The trailer starts off with some shots of our heroes in different situations, with each of them reciting part of Nick Fury’s explanation of the idea behind the Avengers. “There was an idea…” we hear Fury say as we see an alien planet where Tony Stark appears to be in deep thought.

Tony continues the line, “To bring together a group of remarkable people…” As he says this, we see Doctor Strange and Wong looking over Bruce Banner in Strange’s Sanctum. He looks like he just crashed through the ceiling as the Hulk and transformed once he landed. Where he came from is anyone’s guess.

Next we hear Vision continue, “To see if we could become something more…” Vision isn’t in his normal android form though. Here we see him with a human appearance, although the Mind Stone is still shining nice and bright in his forehead. In the scene, he shares a tender moment with Scarlet Witch. The two have had a romantic relationship in the comics and the movies have only teased it up until now. It looks like we’ll be diving all the way into it in Infinity War.

It’s Thor’s turn to speak now. “So when they needed us, we could fight the battles…” he says as he looks out the window of ship into space. It’s not clear what ship he’s on, but it doesn’t appear to be the ship he ended Thor: Ragnarok on. It instead looks like the Milano, the ship of the Guardians of the Galaxy. We know he ends up crossing paths with them, so it would make sense for this scene to take place there.

“That they never could” says Black Widow to finish off the line. What we see while she says it is noteworthy because we see Bruce now in Wakanda with Black Widow, for what appears to be the first time since the end of Age of Ultron. One can presume that he ends up in Wakanda after going to New York first because many of the scenes in the trailer make it seem like the climax will take place there. How and why he ends up going there though is anyone’s guess. Also of note is the Hulkbuster hand that he’s standing next to. I have a theory for this that plays into a scene that comes later in the trailer.

We then cut to New York, with voiceover by Thanos now. “In time, you will know what it’s like to lose. To feel so desperately that you’re right, yet to fail, all the same.” Tony has now met up with Strange, Wong, and Banner at the Sanctum, and they’re right in the thick of Thanos’ invasion on the city. Also in the middle of it all is Peter Parker, stuck on a school bus when his Spidey senses go off, alerting him to the giant space mechanism in hovering over the city.

If you look closely, you can see that Tony has an arc reactor on his chest. You might remember that he hasn’t had an arc reactor on his chest since Iron Man 3, as he had no need for it once he had the piece of shrapnel removed from inside of him that the arc reactor was keeping from killing him. My money is on the belief that the arc reactor is part of his outfit since we see him wearing it throughout the trailer, and that the outfit is what his new armor is being held inside. It’d be a new clever way for Tony to always have armor on him, and we know he’s always coming up with new ways to deploy his armor.

giphy-21.gif

Next up we see the MCU’s most popular villain Loki as he walks amongst the corpses of what one can only presume to be the remaining Asgardians that him and Thor escaped Asgard with in Ragnarok. He offers the Tesseract to an unknown figure, but the smart guess is that it’s Thanos. His ship intercepted Thor’s in the mid-credits scene for Ragnarok, so what we’re seeing in the trailer is likely the immediate aftermath of that encounter. This will likely take place near the start of the movie, and is probably the cause of Hulk/Bruce ending up back on Earth.

Finally, the big man Thanos himself arrives on the scene, stepping through a portal that was likely created by the Space Stone housed inside the Tesseract. I have to say that the CGI for him looks pretty damn good at this stage in production. He looks much better than he did in Guardians of the Galaxy. It’s not totally clear where he’s arriving, but the blue sky in the background makes me think that it’s Earth.

giphy-22.gif

Cut to Spider-Man landing on top of the machine hovering over New York in his fancy new suit that Tony offered him at the end of Homecoming. He may not have wanted it then, but he’s certainly going to need it now.

giphy-24.gif

We also see Thor trying to hold onto a machine of some sort. It looks like he might be trying to pull each side together, but whatever he’s doing, it’s definitely taking all of his strength. I’m thinking that this may be him trying to help as many people escape his ship as possible before Thanos kills them all. Following that is a real quick glimpse at Proxima Midnight, a member of Thanos’ Black Order. This group will be assisting him on his journey to collect all the Infinity Stones by whatever means necessary. Proxima throws her spear at a figure shrouded in darkness who catches it.

giphy-25.gif

T’Challa/Black Panther says to “Get this man a shield,” and then we cut to Steve Rogers/Captain America himself stepping from the shadows, apparently to the relief of Scarlet Witch. Cap’s sporting a new hairstyle and a nice new beard to match. Cap and his group of rogue Avengers have been hiding out since the end of Civil War, so the new look is fitting. Because he’s also given up the mantle of Captain America, he may not actually be going by that name in the movie. It would also help explain the new rugged look he has in the movie.

giphy-26.gif

What follows next is a bombardment of shots that are sure to send any fan into a tizzy. First we see the new Hulkbuster armor leaping into battle. I want to bring this back to my theory that I had at the start of this breakdown, when we saw Bruce standing next to the hand piece of the armor. Because we never see who’s wearing the armor in the trailer, the two possibilities for who may be wearing it are Rhodey/War Machine, or Bruce himself. I doubt it’s Rhodey because we see him later in the trailer flying around without it. On top of that, he may not have much reason to wear it. Bruce on the other hand would.

In Ragnarok, once Bruce returned from his two year time as the Hulk, he was afraid to ever transform again. This was due to the fact that the Hulk was in total control for those two years, and Bruce theorizes that if he transforms into the Hulk again, he may never be able to come back. Fast forward to Infinity War, and Bruce may want to help in the battle, but not want to fight as the Hulk. That would be reason enough for him to use the armor in battle. Ready for my crazier theory? What if that is actually the Hulk inside the armor though? Sure the Hulk can dish out a lot of damage and he can take a lot too, but he’s not invincible. It wouldn’t be too crazy to think that he would use the armor as added protection against Thanos and his army, until he couldn’t use it anymore. It’s just a theory though.

giphy-27.gif

Coming back to the trailer now, we see Black Widow attacking someone with a spear (Possibly Proxima Midnight), alien ships crashing on Earth, and Cap fighting Thanos’ army with T’Challa.

giphy-28.gif

Thanos then choke slams Spidey to the ground on what looks to be the same alien planet that Tony was on at the start of the trailer. Is Peter actually going to be a casualty of Thanos’ conquest? Possibly. The trailer is certainly making it seem that way. It’s not likely that he’s going to stay dead though if he does die since the Infinity Stones are at play and can be the way to bring him back if he does die.

giphy-29.gif

“Fun isn’t something one considers when balancing the universe” Thanos says during quite possibly the most ominous scene of the trailer as two members of the Black Order manage to pin down Vision and attempt to remove the Mind Stone from his forehead. We all knew this moment was bound to happen when Thanos arrived, but it’s still hard to watch, especially since we don’t know what will become of Vision without the Mind Stone.

giphy-30.gif

“But this… this does put a smile on my face,” he continues as we see Thanos place the Space Gem into the Infinity Gauntlet before knocking Tony on his ass. Based on what we know, we can place this scene of him putting the stone in the gauntlet sometime after he receives the Tesseract from Loki. Maybe even in the same scene. Of note is the fact that he already has the Power Stone in the gauntlet. The last time we saw it was on Xandar at the end of the first Guardians movie, meaning that Thanos already went there and took the Stone from the Nova Corps. Is the movie going to start by showing us retrieve it, or will he have done this before the movie begins?

giphy-31.gif

Now we’re reaching the climax of the trailer and it all takes place in Wakanda. We see T’Challa and an army of Wakandan soldiers by his side, as well as Steve and Bucky, all ready to fight Thanos’ army. Falcon flies over the battle, and we can see the Hulkbuster fending off a number of foes on the ground.

giphy-32.gif

It all culminates in the money shot of the trailer: T’Challa, Steve, Bucky, Black Widow, Falcon, War Machine, Hulk, and Okoye (a member of T’Challa’s Dora Milaje) all charging into battle as the classic Avengers theme plays in the background. Epic.

giphy-33.gif

The trailer doesn’t end there though. The final scene of the trailer is of Thor meeting the freaking Guardians of the Galaxy! This meeting definitely takes place after Thanos attacks Thor’s ship, as we saw in the leaked D23 footage, the Guardians encounter Thor floating amongst wreckage in space. Now we know what caused the wreckage.

All in all, this trailer was totally worth the wait. It showed us just the right amount of footage to get us excited, while still not giving away the movie’s biggest mysteries or the plot as a whole. The wait for next summer just got even more intense everyone!
