Road To E3 2018: Bethesda

By: Tyler Miller

There isn’t really too much for me to really talk about when it comes to Bethesda. For me, there are only a select few games from them that I’m truly interested in. Even with those games in mind, a lot of what Bethesda is working on is either a big secret or so far out that we know it’s not going to be shown at E3 this year. Still, that won’t keep me from making a stop here and giving them some proper attention. Let’s get to it then!

What I’m Looking Forward To

Fallout 76

Many fans were excited to hear that a new game in the Fallout series was on the way, only to be disappointed once they found out that Fallout 76 is not a typical entry in the franchise. Instead, according to Kotaku and their sources, the game is an online survival RPG along the lines of DayZ and Rust. While this may be enough to make some swear off the game entirely, I’m waiting until I see what Bethesda shows during their conference before I make any kind of judgments. Based off the information we have now though, I think the concept is intriguing and could be fun.

Rage 2

Rage 2, the sequel that no one ever expected to happen, or even necessarily asked for, is coming to E3 this year, and it looks absolutely insane. With development being headed up by Avalanche Studios (creators of the Just Cause series), everything looks like it’s being turned up to 11 this time around. I never played the original Rage, but it did seem like it was a cool game back when it first game out. The sequel though looks to be taking things in a very different direction and adopting a very different tone, which catches my interest even more than the original did. I’m looking forward to seeing some extended gameplay next week.

Starfield

I don’t have much to say about Starfield because we know just about nothing regarding this game. There were rumors that the game was going to be announced at E3 last year, but that turned out to not be the case. Is this the year where we see something about the mysterious Starfield? I really hope so because I’m hungry for a new RPG from Bethesda. If we do see it though, chances are that it may not come out this year. Lately, Bethesda has liked to release their games in the same year that they get announced. But in a year where they’re already releasing Rage 2 and possibly Fallout 76, where is there space for Starfield? Especially when you consider all the other games that’ll be released in the later months of the year. I’m betting that if we see Starfield at all, we may not get it until next year at the earliest.

What I Don’t Want To Happen

For Bethesda To Bungle Their Show

Although Bethesda’s E3 shows have been pretty good for the most part, last year’s wasn’t the best. It kinda dragged in some places, and lacked that killer app for their show to really center on and dedicate a good amount of time to. There’s a chance that could happen again this year, and I sincerely hope it doesn’t. I want them to have another good show that’s on par with their very first press conference. While that probably won’t happen until Elder Scrolls VI is brought to E3, a guy can still dream right?

And that’s it for Bethesda! Their stop on the Road to E3 2018 is probably going to be the shortest one that we make along the way, but that doesn’t diminish how important their show will be. Let’s see what they have in store for us next Sunday at 6:30 PM PT / 9:30 PM ET.
