Road To E3 2018: Nintendo

By: Tyler Miller

Sorry for missing yesterday guys! It was a very busy day and I had no time to write this up, or even pre-write this so it could be posted yesterday. I know E3 is less than an hour away, but we’re still going to talk about Nintendo real quickly before the show starts. With all that said, let’s make our last stop on the Road to E3 2018!

What I’m Looking Forward To

Super Smash Bros For Switch

Perhaps the most anticipated game of Nintendo’s E3 Direct is none other than Super Smash Bros. The game was announced a few months ago and revealed that the Inklings from Splatoon would be playable characters, as well as teasing the rest of the roster. I’ve been dying to see more from this game, as it’s always been one of my favorite franchises in gaming, and quite possibly my favorite Nintendo franchise. I don’t have a Switch now, but this will be the game that forces me to get one. For those of us that live in or near New York City (like myself), the game will be available to play at the Nintendo Store in Rockefeller Center starting on Tuesday. I plan to go there as much as I can next week so I can play and write about my hands on impressions of the game, so keep an eye out for that!

Star Fox: Grand Prix

The last time Nintendo fans got a Star Fox game, it turned out to be a disappointment that could’ve been better, leading many to wonder when they would get a new entry in the franchise. If the latest rumors are to be believed, Retro Studios (developers of the Metroid Prime trilogy) are working on a spinoff title called Star Fox: Grand Prix. While this may be another disappointment to fans, I’m interested in these rumors. The idea has a lot of potential to be very fun, and Retro being at the helm helps to inspire some confidence in the game, so I’m reserving judgment on this game until we see something concrete.

Pokémon Switch

We just got some brand new Pokémon news last week with the official reveal of Let’s Go Pikachu and Let’s Go Eevee, and Pokémon Quest. That news also came with the announcement that a core game in the franchise is still coming, and will be available next year. To be quite honest, I’m not sure if we’ll get anything else regarding the new core game at E3 this year since we just recently got all that news, but it is E3, so it would make sense to give us at least a bit of footage or some more tidbits of information regarding the games to get fans even more hyped for the next generation of Pokémon. So please Nintendo, give us the good stuff.

A Brand New Mario Kart

This is one that I’m really not that positive will happen this year, but I would love for a new Mario Kart to be announced. I realize that a few months after the launch of the Switch came the release of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, but that was more of a remaster of MK8 with a couple new add ons. I want them to reveal a 100% built from the ground up Mario Kart for the Switch, even if it’s not coming out until sometime next year. It’s very unlikely that this will happen, but I’d be so excited to see this.

Metroid Prime 4

Announced at last year’s E3 after many years of hopes and prayers, Metroid Prime 4 sent shockwaves through the Nintendo fanbase. Even though there wasn’t any gameplay or a developer revealed at the announcement, fans couldn’t help but be excited that Samus would be coming back to consoles. We know that Retro isn’t working on the title, and rumors have people believing that Bandai Namco is the team behind the game. That news has to be announced this year, and the game needs to have gameplay of some sort shown off. I think the game could come out this year, and if it does, it would be a big boon for the Switch’s lineup.

And with that, we’re done with Nintendo! There isn’t anything that I don’t want to happen because Nintendo’s Directs are pretty straightforward and to the point. There’s never really any wasting time that occurs during their Directs, and any goofiness that they do is always funny and cute. So I encourage Nintendo to do their thing and be themselves when they have their Direct Tuesday morning at 9 AM PT / 12 PM ET.

It’s been a long road guys, but we’re finally at the end of the Road to E3 2018! The show is literally about to start in a couple minutes, but we made it in time. I hope you guys are as excited as I am for everything that’s going to be coming at us over the next couple days. I’ll be posting any news and reveals that happen throughout the course of E3, so keep it posted here.
