We got a trailer showing the world earlier today at the Xbox press conference, but Bethesda gave us a nice long look at exactly what Fallout 76 is.
The game takes place 25 years after the bombs have gone off, and you are one of the first people to leave the vaults and venture out into the new world of West Virginia. Confirming all the rumors, the game is a completely online experience, but it can be played solo. You can take on quests and level up with friends or by yourself if you so choose.
Unlike other survival games, death won’t mean the loss of your character or any progress you’ve made. Because of this, game director Todd Howard calls the game a “softcore survival” game. You also aren’t tied to a server in the game. When you’re playing the game, your world will be populated by dozens of other real people, not hundreds of people, so don’t expect to see people around every single corner.
When it comes to friends, you can join them anytime you want to. Upon joining them, your progress travels with you, so no need to worry about starting from scratch in their game.
The base building from Fallout 4 returns as a core component of this game. You can build settlements that are as big or as small, as strong or as weak as you want to. Bases can be attacked by other players or random enemies in the world, so you’ll have to be on your toes. There’s more freedom in building now though, as you can build wherever you want and move the things you build wherever you want. No more building on strict positions, so I expect people will make some really cool settlements.
In the world are nuclear weapons that you can use to destroy any point on the map. As long as you can find the nuclear base and access codes, these weapons are at your disposal. Once you launch them, you can go to the place that you destroyed and scavenge for rare materials.
The game will have a beta ahead of its November 14, 2018 release, but no date for the beta was announced. A collector’s edition will also be available. Called the Power Armor Edition, it comes with a glow in the dark map of the world, figures you can put on the map, and a wearable Power Armor helmet with a functional headlamp and voice modulator.
