PSN Name Changes Are Finally Coming

By: Tyler Miller

This morning, Sony broke the news that players will soon be able to change their PSN name. The news comes from a post on the Playstation Blog, and it’s safe to say that many are happy with this information seeing as how it’s been one of the most requested features for many years.

The feature will start off in beta for anyone that’s a part of the Playstation Preview Program. Your PSN online ID can be changed as many times as you like. The first change is free, but any subsequent changes will cost $10 ($5 for Playstation Plus members). After changing your name, you have the option of displaying your old one alongside your new one, allowing people to find you easily, or you can display only the new one and forget about your old name. Whatever you choose though, you won’t be able to revert your decision afterwards, so think twice about it!

Although this is some great news for players, there is a bit of a catch to it, as not all games will support this change. From the Playstation Blog:

This feature is compatible with PS4 games originally published after April 1, 2018, and a large majority of the most-played PS4 games that were released before this date. However, please note not all games and applications for PS4, PS3 and PS Vita systems are guaranteed to support the online ID change, and users may occasionally encounter issues or errors in certain games. If for any reason you experience issues after changing your ID, you can revert back to your original ID for free at any time (you will only be able to revert once during the preview program). Reverting back to an old ID will resolve most issues caused by the ID change. In addition, when this feature officially launches, a list of compatible games published before April 1, 2018, will be provided on PlayStation.com for reference before you make a change.

It looks like players may want to look at the list of compatible games when it’s released before they jump headfirst into changing their name. There may be a game or two in there that isn’t compatible that they still play that could cause issues for them if they do change their name. Only time will tell of course, and hopefully it will be something that Sony will be able to change with some time. Regardless, the fact that people will be able to change their names at all is a big win for Playstation gamers!

The beta period for the feature will be over at the end of November, and the feature will officially be released for everybody starting at some point early next year.
