Square Enix kicked off their press conference tonight with the game that everyone wanted to see the most: Final Fantasy VII Remake. Boy did they not disappoint.
They started off by showing a snippet of the opening cutscene from the game, before getting into some details regarding the game. The game is still going to be released in episodes, with the Midgar portion of the story being the first one. Producer Yoshinori Kitase stated, “Remaking Final Fantasy VII has allowed us to dive much deeper into the world and its characters than ever before. The game design was optimized for this title as well, and we anticipate two Blu-Ray discs’ worth of gameplay content. The first game in this project expands on the story of Midgar and is such an elaborate retelling that it’s become a solid standalone game in its own right.”
Things then went into a deep gameplay demonstration. Combat merges real time action with strategic combat. Pressing Square causes Cloud to swing his sword. You’re also able to block and dodge enemy attacks. Attacking enemies causes your ATB bar to fill up quickly, but the bar also fills on its own over time except slower. The ATB bar is used to activate Tactical Mode. In Tactical Mode, you’re able to use items, abilities, and magic if you have any Materia equipped. You choose how and when your ATB bar is used. You can also put your different abilities, items, and magic to shortcuts for easy access in the shortcut menu.
You’re also able to switch between your different party members with the press of a button. Whatever character you’re not playing as will continue to fight on their own. We then got footage of the scorpion boss fight from the start of the game and it looked real cool. The presentation culminated with a longer version of the trailer we got yesterday, and it gave us our first look at Tifa!
Final Fantasy VII Remake comes out March 3, 2020.
