New Ghost of Yōtei Trailer Reveals An October Release Date

Sucker Punch Productions has announced that their upcoming title, Ghost of Yōtei will release on PlayStation 5 later this year on October 2 and released a brand new trailer giving us a better idea of the journey that awaits us.

When Ghost of Yōtei was first announced last year, it appeared as if our new protagonist, Atsu, would be hunting for someone, and that’s exactly what will be happening. A gang called the Yōtei Six slaughtered her family when she was a child, but spared her life. Now she’s on a quest for vengeance as she searches for the people who took her family from her.

The team revealed a little more on the PlayStation Blog, confirming that you’ll have a greater degree of freedom in how you progress through the story than in Ghost of Tsushima, since you can go after each member of the Yōtei Six in whatever order you choose. Another key part of the story will be this new system that appears to let us seamlessly experience events from Atsu’s past.

Sucker Punch says that there will be plenty of activities to partake in outside of the main story, with some of the new ones being bounty hunting or searching for weapon senseis who can help improve your skills with various weapons. We’ve seen Atsu use a wide range of weapons in all the gameplay footage that’s been released so far, with the latest trailer revealing that spears will be part of her arsenal, so finding these weapon senseis will likely be one of the more rewarding side objectives in Ghost of Yōtei.

Pre-order information was also revealed today, with pre-orders beginning on May 2. The standard version of the game will cost $70, and pre-ordering it will get you an in-game mask and six PSN avatars. The Digital Deluxe Edition costs $80 and comes with a selection of in-game bonuses. The Collector’s Edition costs $250 and features the same bonuses as the Digital Deluxe Edition, but it also comes with a handful of physical items such as a replica of Atsu’s Ghost mask, her sash, and more.

Ghost of Yōtei is one of my most anticipated games of the year, so I’m excited to finally have a release date to look forward to. The big question that I have now is about the release date for Grand Theft Auto VI. As of right now, it’s still planned to release this year and the window for its release is shrinking bit by bit. One would imagine it’d release sometime between September and November, and if it does, any game that’s releasing in close proximity will want to move out of its way. If it’s coming out anywhere near Ghost of Yōtei, we’re going to have a stacked fall gaming season ahead of us.
