A PlayStation Showcase is seemingly on the horizon, so I’m sharing some of my predictions for what will be at the event. Will Ghost of Tsushima 2 be announced? Is Marvel’s Wolverine getting a gameplay trailer? Should we hope for a new Kingdom Hearts IV trailer and release date? Let’s talk about it all and get hyped!
PlayStation’s internal studios have felt fairly stagnant for a couple of years now. Don’t get me wrong, we’ve gotten some incredible games from them so far this generation. Guerrilla knocked it out of the park with Horizon Forbidden West and its Burning Shores expansion; Sony Santa Monica delivered an epic conclusion to Kratos’ Norse adventures in God of War Ragnarok and its Valhalla DLC; and what more needs to be said about Insomniac Games, a team that’s proven itself to be the PlayStation Studios MVP as they’ve released a steady cadence of amazing games with Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and Spider-Man 2. But although these have each been top-tier games, it’s disappointing that we haven’t received too many fresh ideas in the form of new IP from PlayStation’s biggest internal teams.
Sony hasn’t been in the handheld gaming market since they stopped producing the PlayStation Vita in 2019, but if new reports are to be believed, the company is planning to return to the space in the coming years. Coming from YouTuber Moore’s Law Is Dead (and spotted by WCCFTech), he reports that Sony is in fact working on a new PlayStation handheld system (which I’ll refer to as the Vita 2 for simplicity’s sake) and that it’ll be compatible with PS4 and PS5 games.
This week we got our first PlayStation State of Play for 2024 and it did not disappoint. There were plenty of reveals and announcements for games both big and small, but today I want to talk about my big highlights of the show. Eternights wears its influences on its sleeves and doesn’t try to hide them. Clearly taking plenty of cues from Atlus’ Persona franchise, Eternights strives to distill the strong story and character focus of its inspiration into a smaller package, with an emphasis on romance and action-based combat being its key differentiators. While it does manage to do some things well, it also misses the mark in more ways than one.
Ever since Final Fantasy XVI was announced I’ve been eager to experience a new story in the iconic franchise and see how it continues to evolve. With a more “mature” story, a much stronger focus on real-time action, the promise of over-the-top setpieces, and an acclaimed development team behind it, I had pretty high expectations. And while Final Fantasy XVI managed to meet and even exceed some of those expectations, eventually the luster wore off and one truth revealed itself: that Final Fantasy XVI is simultaneously a fun and boring game to play.
2020 is finally coming to an end! It’s no understatement to say that this has been one of the most difficult years for all of us, but all the while, we’ve had video games to help lighten the load and be a way to escape from the challenges of the real world.
Seven years ago, Naughty Dog released The Last of Us to critical acclaim. The story of Joel and Ellie and their cross country journey resonated with gamers from a gameplay standpoint and an emotional standpoint. It was a game that pushed the industry forward in more ways than one, so expectations for The Last of Us Part II were astronomical. Somehow, the team was able to create a sequel that is a step up from its predecessor in every way imaginable and blow me away yet again.
At long last, Sony finally revealed their highly anticipated Playstation 5. Their event today showcased a number of different games that will be coming to the platform, as well as the surprise reveal of the console itself. Let’s break it all down.
